Seeds of Hope Q2 2009

To find out exactly what Seeds of Hope do, please click here: Seeds of Hope

Seeds of Hope are as grateful as ever for our money this quarter which has enabled them to purchase computers and gain internet access at the school. Each week the children have dedicated time to use the internet to do their homework, gaining information that would otherwise not have been available. They’re also emailing children from other countries including the UK, a fantastic opportunity for both the children of Seeds and their ‘penpals’  to learn about a different way of life.

In addition to a report relating to our donations Seeds also sends me a quarterly newsletter with updates on other developments at the centre. I've done my best to summarise below what has been going on at the centre.

Education

pages/Seeds of Hope - August 2009/seedseducationOver the last year, Seeds helped its children to be better prepared for education, particularly in providing important equipment. Thanks to the joint efforts of Seeds and their parents, they have provided the kids with sports kits for the first time ever, alongside other school materials such as stationery. Seeds also aim to educate the parents on the importance of their parental responsibilities to their children, especially when it comes to education

Nutrition

One of the key areas of Seeds work is in trying to educate the children on nutrition and this work has continued in the last quarter. This is a really difficult task because some of the families live in such poverty that they simply cannot afford to feed their children correctly. As a result, Seeds has been selecting the most vulnerable families and providing them with basic foods to make sure their children receive a suitable diet so that they have enough energy to go to school and learn properly.

Field Trips

pages/Seeds of Hope - August 2009/seedstripAs mentioned in previous updates, Seeds often organise field trips for the children and there have been two such trips in the last quarter. In June, the children were surprised to be taken to Peublo Viejo, an hour outside Huaraz, where they could take part in a host of games organised by some of the Seeds volunteers. Similarly, in July, they ventured to Willcahuain where they could take in the beautiful mountain scenery and enjoy the peace and quiet away from the bustle and noise of Huaraz.

Human Rights

Seeds began to educate the children on the importance of human rights throughout the world during the last quarter to demonstrate how they are often ignored, including in Peru. Seeds held an information session to give the children a first insight into this important subject.

Health Awareness

Alongside its work on nutrition, the work Seeds conducts on health awareness is vitally important. This includes blood testing to check that none of the children suffer from anaemia, which could affect their academic performance and cause complications with their hearts. As a result of medical examinations carried out by Seeds, it was found that one girl was anaemic and so now Seeds has provided her family with suitable food and nutritional advice for her in future.

pages/Seeds of Hope - August 2009/seedskidsAs many of the children live in highly unsanitary conditions, it was also discovered that nearly all of the children have some form of stomach parasite. This led to a de-worming programme and after they were given medication, all the children are now parasite-free. Seeds also set about teaching the parents on the importance of proper hygiene at home.

Seeds also found that some of the children were suffering from flat feet, which can cause severe discomfort and physical difficulties in later life. Seeds can now support those children through therapy to improve this condition.

The Seeds Cafe

pages/Seeds of Hope - August 2009/seedscafeThe Seeds Café is going from strength to strength and is attracting many tourists, with the chef Roz and a gang of volunteers roaming the streets to lure in customers. A series of conversation groups have also been held in the café which not only meant a financial bonus for the café, but also let volunteers meet different children from around Huaraz.

Volunteer Project Co-ordinator

Seeds is also looking for a new Volunteer Project Co-ordinator. Responsibilities include checking new volunteer emails, updating schedules, working on fundraising initiatives, preparing meetings, updating social networking sites, writing our monthly newsletter and ma¬naging donations. They also need someone who would be willing to assist at the school when available. They’re looking for an ‘independent, proactive individual who can use initiative, and is creative with an ability to think outside the box’. The placement is voluntary and could provide excellent work experience for individuals keen to enter the charity job market. And face it, there aren’t any jobs in England so get over to Peru and do something worthwhile instead (my words, not Seeds). To find out more and get an application form, email info@peruseeds.org or seedsofhoperu@hotmail.com.

Finally, Seeds are also now on Facebook - http:\\www.facebook.com\seedsofhoperu.

Thank you once again for choosing to support the children of Seeds of Hope, I know the centre is extremely appreciative for this regular donation.
