Salaam Baalak Trust news Apr 07

report by Marcus Fairhurst

Lots of excellent news heading our way from Delhi…

The new contact centre for street kids living around Old Delhi railway station is up and running! As we’re donating to this project on a six monthly basis (saving on bank costs), keep an eye out for some more detailed news on this project in the second newsletter in July!

SBT has also opened another smaller centre close to one of the cinema plaza complexes in South Delhi. When I was there late last year I noticed that these plush new attractions were attracting vast numbers of poverty stricken children from the nearby slums. In February of this year SBT started the day care program here catering for 14 children. The centre provides bathing facilities for the children, paying for them to use private facilities nearby and giving them soap, shampoo etc. It also provides some non-formal education, first aid and a mid day meal. The center has already expanded, operating from 1pm – 7pm, 6 days a week and catering for over thirty street kids.

A photo exhibition showcasing the work of Vicky Roy, an ex-SBT child, has been earning rave reviews in the Indian Capital. Hosted at the prestigious Experimental Art Gallery in the India Habitat Center, the exhibition was formally opened by Creon Butler, British Deputy High Commissioner and Susanna Moorehead, Head of DFID India.  If I can track down a link to any of this work we’ll let you know!

Lastly, to put things in India terms, over the first three months of this year, YOU have raised for kids of SBT 23, 430 Rupees (Plus more when we get our tax back!). No two ways about it – this is no small sum in India – it will help provide meaningful daily care and help to many, many kids there. Nice one!
