Salaam Baalak Trust

pages/Newsletter Q3 2009/SBTteachingFor this newsletter, our main OPS contact, Nick Thompson has written a piece on why he first volunteered with Salaam Baalak Trust and what he has learnt about the charity since. It's a brilliant insight into how much difference the charity currently makes and hopefully can continue to in the future. We also have a link to SBT's brochure which was put together in the last few months and will be used to publicise the charity's invaluable work.

Seeds of Hope

pages/Newsletter Q3 2009/SBTtrip2 Seeds of Hope continues to have a fantastic impact on the lives of its children. Your donations have helped to give the Seeds kids access to PCs and the internet for the first time, but in the last quarter, we've also learned about how much Seeds are now helping with the kids' diets as well. Seeds are also now looking for people to hopefully sponsor some of their kids.

Headway - East London

pages/Newsletter Q3 2009/HeadwayJohn2 Headway East London were treated to a visit from the newlywed Mr and Mrs John Arnold recently when they visited the centre to help out for the day - has anyone ever looked as happy making bread then in this photo? (John is on the right and neither of the other people are married to him, just to clarify). John has reported back on a very enjoyable day in which he learnt the finer intricacies of bread-making and he also has news on what Headway are currently spending OPS money on.

The Choir With No Name

The Choir With No Name, one of the 'Charities we like'  - www.choirwithnoname.org/ is having their Christmas Concert at a venue at Kings Cross on the 10th Dec. The choir was started last year by a lady called Marie who combined her passion for singing with her day job of working with homeless people. You can have a look at the flyer here: pdf icon ChoirFlyer.pdf(330 KB)

In their own words, “The Choir with No Name is made up of homeless people and other men and women from the very edges of our society. We sing pop, rock, soul, gospel, reggae, musicals.. you name it, we'll give it a go.. although we've yet to try any thrash metal or grime. We rehearse once a week (with a decent dinner at the end of rehearsal!) and we perform in London regularly. We were founded on the premise that singing makes you feel good; it distracts you from all the nonsense in life and helps you to build up your confidence and abilities"

I went to one of their concerts earlier this year which was loads of fun (lots of singing by everyone) so if you fancy going let me know – John Arnold - john@onepercentscheme.org.

The Hub

True, it's getting dark and cold and we're all drifting into winter hibernation, but nevertheless a date for your diaries. On 25th Nov, The (Youth) Funding Network are holding their final event of the year at the Hub in Islington.

It’s basically a Dragons Den type affair where grass-root charities come to pitch their ideas and raise funding. We had a great evening when we went in March: interesting, informative, great people, great venue, bar, music - ticks all the boxes really.

It kicks off at 7.00pm. The Hub is just behind Angel tube: islington.the-hub.net/public/. Tickets are £10, which, conveniently, buys you a £10 voucher to donate to the cause(s) of your choice. There is further info on their facebook page. Hope to see you there – Marcus Fairhurst. marcus@onepercentscheme.org.
