Headway East London Q2 2009

For information on what Headway East London do, please click here: Headway (East London)

As agreed with Headway East London at the end of last year, money from OPS has continued to go towards the funding of day-to-day activities and outings. These are the types of small events which Headway East London can struggle to fund through their large donors but which remain essential to giving their attendees new experiences and social interactions which they would struggle to achieve independently.

In the last quarter, money from OPS has gone towards:

  • Holding BBQs. As attendees only attend for one or two days per week, the events are staggered so that all can participate throughout the quarter.
  • A trip to the Natural History Museum.
  • pages/Headway East London - August 2009/Headway Sailing Transport to outings, in particular taxis to Southwark Sailing Centre for 5 members to participate in a sailing activity. This is now happening on a fortnightly basis.
  • Lastly, some of the money has been used to buy gardening equipment and plants, including bedding plants and window boxes. Attendees have been involved in planting these and caring for the garden.

Myself and Ms Anna Ray are heading down to the centre in a couple of weeks to do some breadmaking with some of the attendees! I have visions of an all out food fight with flour bombs flying around the centre, but either way we will report back next quarter.

pages/Headway East London - August 2009/croshaw I'd also like to thank David Croshaw who has been our representative at Headway East London for the last year. David combined his twin talents of drumming and gardening to help out there on a regular basis but the  experience also seemed pretty beneficial to him. He is now moving to Leeds to study Music at the uni there, with the aim of eventually doing music therapy and his experience at Headway was one thing which demonstrated to him the effect music can have in the rehabilitation of people who have suffered serious injuries and disabilities. Thanks David for all your effort there.

That also means that we would still love it if anyone could volunteer to visit Headway East London on a regular basis and act as our contact with the charity. If anyone would like more information on the charity or would like to volunteer, please get in touch through our email address: trustees@onepercentscheme.org.

Until next time, I hope you all have a great summer.
