Headway East London Q2 2008
I visited the newly refurbished and idyllically located centre (overlooking the canal leading to Victoria Park with Haggerston Park next door) a couple of months ago, and since then have been back every Monday...
My main contact at Headway East London is Phillippa, who is the Volunteer Support Co-ordinator at the centre and discusses with OPS where your money goes. She has requested to use a portion of donations to go towards a project in Wood Green, a newly founded drop in centre in desperate need of gardening materials and tools.
Your money has also funded a canoeing trip on the canal, thoroughly enjoyed by all. Apparently one of the challenges was for everyone to hold each-others canoe in series while each person took turns to stand upright whilst floating on the water, which every person managed to do! A great example of what activities can do for an individual’s motivation and confidence, considering some of the members at Headway East London have quite serious mobility problems.
Having attended Headway East London over the last couple of months I would heartily recommend anyone with some time spare to come visit (indeed any similar type of project in your local area) as you have the opportunity to get to know some very interesting people from all different backgrounds. Contact me by email if you want to find out more - davidcroshaw[at]yahoo.co.uk. I am now working with Alex, a music therapist who works at Headway East London two days a week, to gain more experience in music therapy as this is a field I hope to pursue a career in. So thanks to OPS for putting me in touch with Headway East London in the first place!
