Headway East London Q3 2008

It is once again my pleasure to give you the latest news from Headway East London. Unfortunately I haven't been able to attend as regularly as I have done previously (as rather foolishly I have started a full-time course) but I was lucky enough to be invited to the official opening of the new centre on Kingsland Road. Although the new building has been up and running for the last few months, this was the proper inauguration of Bradbury House, with its brand new facilities and newly completed garden.

The inauguration day was held on Friday 3rd October, and was incredibly busy considering it was held during the early afternoon. I was asked by Alex (the Music Therapist at Headway East London) to accompany him and a member (who played the flute) in playing background music for the soiree. The drums/guitar/flute ensemble went down a storm (or maybe it was my imagination and everyone ignored us..!). While we were playing away, people were invited to peruse the building and admire the artwork and stories that came from the members over the last few years. In the gym area there were various films being screened made by and for the members of Headway, some of which were both very entertaining and profound at the same time (hats off to all involved). pages/Headway - Nov 2008/art room

After the free food and drink were rightly demolished, the speeches began in the main foyer. Again, these proved quite moving, especially those given by members themselves. They described how Headway East London had given them a sense of acceptance, and from that came confidence, which then helped them to go on to achieve great things. Soon after that the cake was cut and champagne was distributed; the centre was now officially open. pages/Headway - Nov 2008/common room

I hope to return to Headway East London in the next few weeks, and continue to visit weekly like I did before I started my course. Not only do I miss the experience of playing music with the members there and learning more about the value of music therapy and its applications, I also miss the atmosphere which all the members and workers help to create.
