Headway Report - July 2007

Emma Jewell

Thanks to money from The One Percent Scheme, Headway has enjoyed lots of excellent outings over the last couple of months. A ladies only group went to see the one-man puppet show 'Little Matchstick Girl' which they all thoroughly enjoyed. On the way back they managed to squeeze in a sumptuous lunch. A group of women from another day also enjoyed the opportunity to go out and have tea and cakes at a local cafe. Both trips were a great bonding experiences for the Headway women as they are greatly out numbered by the men at the centre. It gave them space and time to share the difficulties of being a women with an acquire brain injury.

Both days loved visiting this famous 'Lane' and the rare chance to go out with friends and eat at a restaurant. We also took 2 outings to Cabaret Mechanical, at Old Spittalfields Market. Attenders enjoyed looking at the exhibition of mechanical puppetry, particularly the bar brawl scene which included a Viking playing a computer game and a man in a suite collapsed drunk at the bar!

More recently, Headway took a small group to the Design Museum where they looked at work by a futuristic designer. They saw models of cars and planes of the future! After the exhibition the group enjoyed a picnic by the river. Two different days of attenders went on a tour of Tower Bridge followed by a picnic. We even had a professional photographer taking pictures of the day! (see photo attached) Headway took a group down to the Tate Modern for a leisurely browse of the paintings and lunch by the river. The attenders enjoyed the scenic walk across the Millennium Bridge, overlooked by St.Paul's, and listening to the street performers along the South Bank.

.././shared/headwaypic2Last but not least, in celebration of summer arriving, we took all the attendees from each day of the week down to Haggerston park for a picnic and games. There were competitive games of football and more sedate activities such as singing, dominoes and boule. A fun time was had by all. (see photo)
All these outings would not have been possible without the kind donation from The One Percent Scheme. Your money is enabling people to do and see things that would otherwise not be possible.

We are also having BBQ's at Headway on these dates 8th, 9th and 10th August. We would love the help of volunteers to help buy and prepare food, cook and run fun activities on the day. Let me know which date would be the best, you're all welcome to any number of them.
