Charities We Like

The Youth Funding Network is a funding event for small chairites - it is a bit like the BBC's 'dragons den' but for charities instead of entrepreneurs. Held every few months in London, myself and Marcus have been along to a few and have always been really impressed with the great little charities they've found. The charities below are ones we have seen at these events. Check out ytfn.wordpress.com/ for more info and details of their next event.

.././shared/appleThe London Orchard Project John, Anna & I went to a another really cool night put on by YTFN recently and came across another hum dinger of a group that is doing great work to spruce up green spaces all over London with luscious fruit bearing trees - I believe that areas like this are referred to as Orch-ards. Their web site is thelondonorchardproject.org/. Apparently it's undergoing a face-lift and their will be a new snazzy one up soon.

Headline news:
2 courses called "everything you need to know about growing fruit trees in urban spaces" planned for June 25th and 26th

  • Apple day on 17th October
  • They looking for partner community groups and individuals to get involved in planting 20 community orchards next winter, so if you're interested or want to suggest sites/groups contact: carina@thelondonorchardproject.org
  • For those of you lucky enough to live near lovely Hackney they're planning on doing some urban harvesting in partnership with Transition Town Hackney and Stoke Newington, and we're planning on planting a new orchard in Haggerston, and hopefully 2 further sites.tthackney.ning.com

Happy planting y'all.

Soko Kenya www.soko-kenya.com/ really struck a chord with me, providing as it does a creative, community driven solution to the severe increase in poverty that has afflicted Kenya, and particularly  this tourism dependent region of Ukunda, since 2007. The project seeks to harness the increasing global commitment to fair trade/ethical fashion, by producing stylish garments whilst guaranteeing workers a reasonable wage, humane working conditions (including a creche facility) and training opportunities. Soko Kenya is a grass root organisation that is making real strides.  A more detailed proposal concerning their immediate plans/needs can be found on their website.
