13.05.06 White Cross Mission Update
Needless to say, Jenny Townsend (the main trustee of the White Cross Mission) was delighted when she found out that we had re-elected WCM as one of our causes for 2006. In response, she sent a letter detailing how Casa St Nicholas has fared over the last year whilst we have supported them.
A lot of our money has been going towards the new Social, Educational
and Developmental Programme which aims, ultimately, to motivate
the children towards as close a resemblance to independent living
as possible. Within St Nicholas, there are two orphans who have
really made great progress with this over the last year - Gabor
and Cornelia.
Gabor has got so far with it that he is now regularly driving the tractor, is responsible for looking after and slaughtering the pigeons and chickens, and will soon be learning how to slaughter pigs. As you might guess, for Gabor this is virtually steady employment: a massive achievement.
Cornelia, on the other hand, is currently being trained in the role of a chamber maid. She is turning out to be the star of the St Nicholas bunch, and it looks almost certain that she will be one of the few who has the chance of an independent life. She is hoping to work in a guesthouse.
Of course, neither Gabor nor Cornelia would have had much help in forging out lives for themselves if it wasn't for the donations of the One Percent Scheme. And, over the course of 2006, we will be able to continue the work we have started in Casa St Nicholas.
